cultural memory, biodiversity and agroecology: Linking tradition, education and science for sustainability
When held in the heart of the Mayan cultural area, the agroecology course of this year will provide a special opportunity to explore the food system sustainability at the interface of the local farming traditions and globalization. Peasants in Chiapas and adjoining Central American region are the stewards of agrobiodiversity and cultural knowledge with five thousand years of adaptation to a complex range of environments, from temperate to tropical wet and dry. While local farmers explore new crops and practices cultural memory contributes to conservation by resisting the imposition of external homogenizing packages. The combination of ancient agricultural traditions, local knowledge in modern agro-ecology evolution and create exciting new frontiers for research, education and practice. We will explore these boundaries with local farmers in their communities and their fields and exchange experiences across the region, while visiting the school gardens in both rural and urban schools, we can see how communities incorporate cultural memory in public education to convey the agro-ecological knowledge and traditions. The course will a unique view of the proposed small-scale producers to modern rural environmental sustainability.
